The Retry “Art” Sampler September 16, 2007

A friend asked to see some art that I reckon is fairly decent at the moment. Instead of hiding it in an e-mail, let me share with everyone. I’ve blogged about most of these people or sites before but there’s no substitute for an easy to click blog post to get motivated to look again. So, in no particular order, here’s some food for thought:
Serious Painting
John Copeland – Probably my favourite painter at the moment.
Slightly Different Painters
Jim Woodring – A great contemporary Surrealist
Jeff Soto – Giant robots and rainbows never looked this good. Jeff’s work has been translated into a short film by 3 Legged Legs. It’s amazing to see this fine-art-street-type style in motion.
Ashley Wood – Famous for concept art, comic books and being a “little” brash at times. He paints on real boards and sells the original pieces to collectors. He qualifies as a real artist.
Interactive Media
Hoogerbrugge – A Netherlands artist who uses drawings of himself to lay waste to the repititions of modern culture. Or something like that. This music video is the quick sampler of his work but check out the website for classic focussed Hoogerbrugge.
Kooky
Michel Gagne – This is his 6th book, Frenzied Fauna: From A to Z.
ICanHasCheezBurger -There’s a meme called Lolcats that many would not consider to be art, but it has been appropriated accepted adopted by the masses and shares some of the traits of art: visual aesthetic, an underlying theory, self-imposed executional rules, a sense of history. Is it -ism or is it -crapism? Will people in 100 years time have retrospectives of Lolcats? And in case you think I’m writing total rubbish look up the definition of Art.
Where to find more
Artshole - A UK listing for art
Art Krush – The e-mail publication and this list will see you right.

Phamous Update July 7, 2007

It seemed to take Phorever! I’ve finally spotted some new content on Phamous 69, everyone’s favourite diamante encrusted glam ero-disco magazine. If you haven’t seen it yet, picture high-end photography, film and writing applied to slick surfaces (including models) with a whiff of decadence. City kids swear by it.
Behind Rikki Kasso July 7, 2007

This is probably one of the most prolific creators on the net. Rikki Kasso is from Shibuya, Japan and runs 7 blogs, probably has a real job as well, draws, photographs and exhibits and also , I repeat, finds time to blog about it all. I’ve mentioned Tokyo Undressed before, and here is another of his projects, Behind The Lines. Impressive if only for the sheer volume of illustrations. If you’re a fan of ink and paper and Japanese bondage/furries you’ll get a kick out of this site. NSFW.
ps. Cool Girl 365 has a feature by Rikki Kasso. You’ll have to dig for it but the digging is fun. Again: NSFW.

Thomas Brodahl says, “While waiting for Red Hot Chili Peppers to come on stage. I was standing in the photo pit shooting the crowd. Everyone was so sweaty and naked. Looked like a big orgy. Albeit not a very pleasurable one
“.
Careful cropping, a few naked torsos and a little push from the crowd makes for some fun photographs.
Michael David Andre – Blurry Artist April 28, 2007

Michael David Andre is a guy who loves pornographic images and photoshop (for colour correction). His site is fairly safe for work considering what he builds his art out of: apparently mostly found porn images. The feel of his work is worth a look even if, like me, you’re not entirely convinced that this work has any resonance.
ADD:I got a mail from Michael explaining his work and technique, which I think is damn nice of him. The visual effect is interesting because it’s not a Photoshop creation. He says: “The distortion in my work is made using optical lenses in front of the Polaroid camera that I use to reshoot pictures. Call it adaptive recycling if you really need a conceptual explanation.”
400 Strippers April 8, 2007

This Flickr account has a sampling from 400 Polaroids of strippers trying out for dancing jobs at a club in Southern California. They were shot during the 60′s and 70′s and were bought for $10. For image collectors it’s a bit of a treasure trove (the junk shop variety) and worth a look. Bring back the beehive!

Female Persuasion – Artists April 1, 2007

This is a showcase for female artists. It’s a well designed, a little shallow in terms of content and has some of the coolest looking contributors on the web. Their theme is personal objectifying feminism. Which… means… that there are a lot of sexy propaganda quotes? I like it for the art.
Female Persuasion
myspace/femalepersuasion
virb/femalepersuasion
ps. if you go to their Contributors page and click on their personal pages you see some of the best designed Under Construction splash pages on the web. Like FP, they’re sexy, but don’t go as deep as you’d like.
pps. check out Periel. She’s the contributing writer who likes a Bush joke.

MTV Switch “Faces” vs Audi A4 “Faces” June 20, 2007

Play MTV Switch “Faces”
This is a classic example of ideas stepping on ideas. Which is to say these two ads almost come from the same cutting room. I appreciate that the takeout is different, one is about the hungry mouths of power outlets and the other is about the big mouth of the Audi A4. I also understand that the creative teams were oblivious to one another (MTV Switch 2007, Audi A4 2005). And the MTV ad is for an environment saving “charity” and Audi is an environment destroying car. Despite all these dissimilarities, they are ridiculously similar (and I’m sure similar to a hundred other references).
So, the important question is: Which soundtrack do you prefer?
ps. The Audi A4 ad is mine by the way.
